Tesla finally delivers on a promise it made back in 2021 by allowing your Tesla Model S Plaid to reach 200 mph if you’re willing to spend the money on a new Track Package. What has altered and what might the most recent Track Pack provide your electric sedan?
The brake system comes first, and as some people have discovered the hard way, the Model S Plaid’s brakes are lacking when it comes to repeated high-speed excursions. Tesla first removes the factory-installed brake callipers and rotors before draining the brake fluid. After that, a fresh set of two-piece carbon-silicon carbide (also known as carbon-ceramic) rotors with aluminium hats—the component that connects to the wheel hub—is mounted. The rear pair is the same diameter but 32 mm wider than the front pair, which measure 410 x 40 mm.
The forged aluminium callipers and a pair of new, high-performance brake pads to go with the carbon-silicon carbide rotors are inserted once the hubs have been set. With these upgraded callipers, which have integrated parking brakes, the four-piston front and two-piston rear callipers are replaced with six-piston front and four-piston rear callipers for even greater clamping force to counteract the potential momentum of a 4,766-pound missile travelling at 200 mph. The Plaid’s firmware is then updated to make use of these new brakes while fresh, “track-ready” brake fluid is injected into the brake system.
The Track Package will bring about further changes in addition to that. The front and rear sets of 20×10 and 20×11 forged aluminium Zero-G wheels will be installed, followed by a pair of Goodyear Supercar 3R tyres with 285/35R20 front and 305/30R20 rear measurements. Additionally, the Zero-G wheels come with their own valve stems, centre caps, and lug nut covers.
Last but not least, since all the necessary hardware can support that extremely high speed, the speed limiter is set to 200 mph, enabling the Plaid to live up to its 200 mph claim.
